Any industrial, commercial or institutional site storing 200 litres of oil or similar
liquid above ground in one or more containers is subject to legislation.
The
basic requirements of this are that:
I) tanks, drums, IBCs and any other containers storing oil must be
stood within a bund or drip tray;
Ii) this must contain at least 110% of the largest container, or 25%
of the total capacity stored, whichever is the greater;
Iii) for single drums stored at a point-of-use, a drip tray with a
capacity of 25% would normally be acceptable.
When making an assessment of what level of
storage is required the following questions will need to be answered.
- What liquids and how much?
- How many containers of each type, maximum at any one time?
- Is the storage to be in or outdoors?
- Is mechanical handling available?
- Do the products stored require segregation?
- Are flammable liquids to be stored?
The answering of these question could by implication raise other questions.
Remember that in solving an environmental issue a safety at work issue could
result. Hence the need to look at all aspects of fluid storage and put together a
package that satisfies current and future legislation and meets the
requirements of the workplace.
